The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for Assembly Elections in five states/UTs, starting April 9, 2026. In economic news, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised India's GDP growth projection upward to 7.2% for FY 2025-26, citing robust manufacturing and consumer demand.

National News: Election Schedule for Five States Announced

The Election Commission of India (ECI) officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry on March 15, 2026. The polling will be conducted in phases:

  • April 9, 2026: Single-phase polling in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.
  • April 23, 2026: Single-phase polling in Tamil Nadu and Phase 1 for West Bengal.
  • April 29, 2026: Phase 2 for West Bengal.
  • May 4, 2026: Counting of votes and declaration of results for all states.

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into immediate effect across these regions. Shortly before the announcement, the West Bengal government committed to clearing long-standing Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears for state employees and pensioners.

Economy: RBI Upgrades GDP Forecast

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised its GDP growth forecast for the financial year 2025-26 to 7.2%, up from the previous estimate of 6.8%. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das highlighted that India remains the fastest-growing major economy, supported by a 7.8% growth rate in Q3. Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and IT reported a milestone of 500 million e-governance transactions in March 2026 alone, signaling rapid digital adoption.
