November 27, 2025 India's Non-Cricket Sports Shine: Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Medal Haul in Table Tennis and Deaflympics

India has marked a significant milestone in its sporting landscape with Ahmedabad officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. This development paves the way for India to potentially introduce Yoga as a medal sport at the event. Beyond this major announcement, Indian athletes have demonstrated commendable performances across various non-cricket disciplines, securing medals in the ITTF World Youth Championships, concluding a successful Deaflympics shooting campaign, and competing in international football and hockey tournaments.

In a landmark decision for Indian sports, Ahmedabad has been formally ratified as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. The confirmation came during the Commonwealth Sport's General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. This achievement underscores India's growing ambition to become a global multi-sport hub.

As the host nation, India plans to leverage this opportunity to advocate for the inclusion of Yoga as a medal sport at the 2030 Games. This move aligns with India's efforts to promote Yoga on the international stage, with discussions also ongoing for its potential inclusion in the 2036 Olympics, for which Ahmedabad is also a prospective host city. The 2030 Games are expected to feature between 15 to 17 sports, with the final programme to be announced in 2026. Squash is also among the sports under consideration for inclusion.

Indian athletes have also delivered notable performances in other non-cricket sports over the past 24 hours:

  • Table Tennis: India secured two medals, a silver and a bronze, at the ITTF World Youth Championships held in Romania.
  • Shooting: The Indian contingent concluded a highly successful Deaflympics shooting campaign in Tokyo, bringing home a record 16 medals.
  • Football: India is set to compete against Chinese Taipei in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers in Ahmedabad.
  • Hockey: In the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the Indian team faced a narrow 2-3 defeat against Belgium in a rain-affected match.
  • Kabaddi: The Indian women's kabaddi team clinched their second consecutive Women's Kabaddi World Cup title, defeating Chinese Taipei with a score of 35-28.
  • Multi-sport Events: Jain University emerged at the top of the medal tally on the third day of the Khelo India University Games 2025 in Rajasthan.
  • Tennis: Veteran Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna is slated to team up with Daniil Medvedev for the first time in India for the World Tennis League.

These achievements collectively highlight India's diverse sporting talent and its growing presence on the global non-cricket sports stage.
